It was in 1876 the first public institution of higher learning opened in the State of Texas as Texas A&M University. The developers wanted an educational system with focus on the local needs so Agricultural and Mechanical curriculum took prescience, hence the abbreviation A&M.

Basically, Texas A&M University is part of the university system of the same name. The Texas A&M University consists of a network of:

  • 9 universities
  • 8 state agencies
  • 1 health science center

So how did Texas A&M University actually come about? It originated as a land grant college through the Texas Legislature established in 1821. The Texas A&M University officially opened its doors to students on October 4, 1876 with only 6 faculty members and a meagerly 40 students; hardly the makings of what is thought of as a university in today’s world.

Despite the fact the A&M in the university's name has not been deleted – this is merely an identity with the school's past roots. However, this university is far from being limited to the offerings of agricultural and mechanical undergraduate courses.
